No. 8: Rent a hotel room because hotels are awesome

15.01.2017

I’ve always loved staying at hotels – the comfy beds, the warm robes and mostly because whenever I stay in a hotel, it’s usually because I’m on an adventure somewhere or someone form overseas has come to visit. Staying in hotels have always been associated with extremely positive memories. This particular trip to the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach came to be because my genius of a little sister was invited to participate in this program at the University of Wollongong even though she’s only in her early high school years. As it fell perfectly during the school holidays, we figured we’d make a trip out of it. So my little sister, little brother, boyfriend and I decided to take a little road trip to Wollongong. We arrived in Wollongong a few hours early and decided to spend some time at Wollongong Central. The first thing we noticed was Bannos Brownies, which was a store that sold different brownie flavours (and gelato too). Now anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love brownies. I used to make them for my parents all the time as a kid, and it was always the best to have them in the morning before school with the glass of milk I was always required to drink. So you can only imagine how insanely excited I was when we found this place. I got a Salted Caramel Brownie and it was so rich and delicious and we managed to make it last longer than a few minutes! After stocking up on snacks for the beach the next day, we headed to the University of Wollongong to make sure we were prepared for the next morning. Despite it being the summer holidays, the campus was pretty busy, and we thankfully managed to find our way. It definitely helped that the University was about 5 minutes from the mall and just under 10 minutes away from the hotel. The staff were so polite and chatty and I loved that they personalised the experience of checking in. We even got upgraded to a beach-facing room with a balcony which was gorgeous. After checking in and freaking out over the room, we decided to explore the hotel a little bit. Despite the resolve to spend some time relaxing, we all felt drawn to the gym and decided to make the most of it being completely empty. After an hour or so, we decided to call it and, after a nice cool shower, decided to head to bed for an early night.

Now thanks to this early night, G and I were up at 11pm, just in time for the Sleepwalkers Room Service Menu (you can tell we’ve stayed at hotels enough to remember what it’s called). As per tradition we had a Thai Green Chicken Curry which always hits the spot before relaxing into the fluffy quilt.

The next morning we woke up bright and early for a buffet breakfast before taking my sister to the University. My absolute favourite thing about this breakfast buffet was that they served rice pudding in tiny little mugs and they were absolutely delicious! I wish I knew how to make it, because the cravings are so real! After dropping her off we headed straight to the beach. No use in wasting the day away especially since it was pretty hot, the waves looked amazing from our balcony view and the beach was just across the road from the hotel. Definitely a selling point for this hotel – the best location ever. There was no need to lug heavy bags or worry about our valuables and our room and the showers were only 2 minutes away. There was no need to worry about travelling far with insane beach lethargy which was so great! After the beach we made use of the hotel pool to do some laps, and it was really refreshing to swim around a little bit without being knocked over by waves or covered in sand.

All in all, this experience was pretty cool. I absolutely loved the hotel – the service, the fluffy beds, the views and most of all, the location. It was just like having a beach house, only your room was serviced and there was a buffet breakfast. 10/10, would highly recommend. Thanks to all the lovely people at Novotel Wollongong Northbeach for making our stay extra special!
